چکیده
Three patients developed methaemoglobinaemia after eating meat contaminated with excessive nitrites. Diagnosis was delayed in the first two mild cases but was promptly made in the third most severely affected case.

We report a case of methaemoglobinaemia in a 2 year old girl after ingestion of an 'aphrodisiac' containing nitrite. The availability of these products, their poor labelling, and their intended presence in domestic bedrooms all serve to increase the hazard they pose to young children.

On this occasion imprecise ordering led to the use of sodium nitrite rather than the usual potassium nitrate, with extremely serious consequences.
